The purpose: The idea was to reduce the risk of mobile phone radiation.
Nearly twenty years after I designed the original Pop Phone for Native Union, the company just released a new version that retains the same iconic form and design language.
Back in 2008, as smartphones were becoming part of everyday life, many people were concerned about prolonged exposure to mobile phone radiation. The idea was simple: create a contemporary handset that allowed users to keep their mobile phone away from their head while offering the comfort and familiarity of a traditional telephone receiver.
What started as a simple concept became one of Native Union's most recognisable early products and helped shape the brand's early identity. Looking back, I'm proud to have contributed to the creation of a product whose design has remained relevant for almost two decades.
For me, this is one of the greatest rewards of being an industrial designer: creating products that endure, remain relevant, and continue to connect with people over time.
